E.D. Taylor

E.D. Taylor obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from the University of Utah. She worked almost exclusively in mixed media on paper for the year and six months it took to build a portfolio substantial enough for submission to several graduate level art programs. She ultimately decided on the Rhode Island School of Design where she pursued silkscreen, etching, and particularly burin engraving.

Burin engraving, also known as line engraving, involves using a sharp tool, called a burin or graver, to carve an image into a metal plate, usually copper or steel. Rounded shapes are carved by means of turning the plate into the graver, while the graver remains stationary in the artist's hand. The resultant lines are then filled with etching ink. At that point the carved image can be printed by placing dampened rag paper on top of the plate, often referred to as a matrix, and running this paper-matrix sandwich through an etching press at high pressure

Not all of Ms. Taylor's opulent and innovative abstract/figurative works incorporate engraving; however, the discipline inherent in the engraving process has exerted a profound influence on her art practice. Her sense of realism and her love of detail have consequently expanded.

In June of 2002, Ms. Taylor received her Master of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island School of Design. Her art has been exhibited in diverse venues, including the Warwick Museum of Art, in Warwick, Rhode Island; the Absolute Art Gallery, in San Marino, California; and the Brooklyn Front Gallery, in Brooklyn, New York. E.D. Taylor lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio.
