This piece comes from East Java dating from the late Classical Period of Hindu Java, the Majapahit Period, 1293 - 1520 AD. The Hindu Java period was at its peak, having become powerful through trade with surrounding South East Asian states, The Middle East, India and China. Much of this period was relatively stable with the waning of the power of the Srivijaya in Sumatra and the consolidation of the kingdoms of East and Central Java.
The Majapahit kingdom was the last Hindu-Buddhist period before the coming of Islam and then the Portuguese in 1511. This led to a profound change in the art and architecture of Java.
