lotus ceramic bowl
This is a ceramic bowl decorated with lotus petals around the top and faint floral designs on the outside of the vessel. The glazed surface shows some deterioration. The bowl is 20 cm in diameter and 11 cm high.

This piece was found in Central Java, most likely dating from the late Classical Period of Hindu Java, the Majapahit Period, 1293 - 1520 AD. The item has design elements in common with pieces that were traded from what is now Viet Nam and Thailand. It may have originally come from those areas but was most likely made in pre-Islamic Java.

The Majapahit kingdom was the last Hindu-Buddhist period before the coming of Islam and then the Portuguese in 1511. This led to a profound change in the art and architecture of Java.
